While watching the devastation that Hurricane Sandy brought to the Northeastern Seaboard and our beloved NYC, we became more and more frustrated that we could do nothing to help those in need. After Mandy was sent to two RedCross Shelters in Long Island that were shut down immediately and she could not find a way to give back once back in the city, it became clear that a grassroots movement was necessary to bring a measure of comfort and help to those in NYC. With the help of twitter, by the end of that first Thursday, we had fed 60 people at the Bowery Mission on the LES, set up two donation hubs on the Upper West Side, and this blog. Our work has continued and we have brought food to Far Rockaway, Staten Island, Coney Island, and many areas in Brooklyn. We will not discontinue our work until there is no one else in need from their experience with the storm.
